Final Project Piece

Our society is extremely susceptible to change and extreme advancement. This is mainly because humans are a species that adapt and create new works of art or innovative inventions that will help aid society. These inventions are simply made to make society function more fluidly and effectively. This drive to make more cutting-edge inventions comes from our need to constantly be moving forward. In #Accelerate Manifesto, the idea of accelerationism is meant to push society toward a radical change by changing or repurposing capitalism (Williams & Srnicek 1). Although this idea may not necessarily be represented in the way in which we change and utilize technology it is a possible means of reaching the point of replacing jobs with androids much quicker. If someone were to design some incredible android invention that was just a slight different or better than the other more common ones, then there might be someone who wishes to push that boundary by making another machine that operates with a greater diverse skill set. This will set the bar of androids and machines to a whole other level, and that machine will now be the novel area of study. Therefore, if anyone wants to make any progress or profit they will have to either match that level of efficiency or increase the ability of the next generation of robots, so that consumers will want to buy one. Now, there will be a rapid social change in terms of technology that will happen over a short period of time. This will then start the cascade of events that will bring society closer and closer to replacing even more high-skilled jobs with androids or machines that will complete the job faster and more efficiently at a lower cost.

In today’s day and age, it is traditional to go to school, get a job, make a living, and then continue to live as a functioning member of society. If androids are created to replace jobs for people, then this cycle of orthodox living would be restricted during the phase where people must acquire a job. This restricting aspect will force people to either go into working with androids or not having a stable job. There are many possible situations that could occur if this were to be the future situation of society. One of these situations could be a possible decline in the population of the world, a larger dichotomy between the wealthy and poor classes, and a potential increase in education that deals with electrical/mechanical engineering, and a void in skillsets such as medicine, carpentry, culinary arts, etc. For example, in the play R.U.R. by Karel Capek, there is a point in Act II where they mention a decline in the number of births (Kapek Act II). So, people have stopped having children, and this decline could have come from the people’s fear of not being able to support their children due to their loss of income. However, there is also the fact that at this point in the play the robots have taken over, and most people may have lost their ability to be autonomous and free. Kapek is essentially trying to show his audience that if androids were to take over there would be no possibility for human life. There would be this consistent increase in android production, and this increase would slowly push away the human population. This is a highly likely possibility due to the overriding nature that could arise from the exponential advancement of technology.
