In Response to Cami's Show-and-Tell

The episode in Black Mirror was such an accurate representation of what we are learning. The replica of Ash was not original ENOUGH because although we can attempt to remake things, nothing can ever be the same. Especially with people, it is not that he was not like him because he was in fact an exact replica, but the emotions were different. He could not be himself because he was not himself.
As we said the place and time is most important in a memory, so with humans the memories and feelings cannot be replicated. Originals are in fact originals and how ought we expect remakes to be like the original? As much as the woman wishes she can have her lover back, there would be no way. The remake probably hurt her more than the initial loss; to see what she loved the most be lost again seems like a hard feat to conquer. Though she was able to recognize the lack of originality of the counterfeit Ash.
This invention to recreate the ones we love would be magnificent. I would love to see lost loved ones once again. Though I believe the quality would wear out. It should not be made to last forever, but only for a moment. This would help people to cope by allowing a few last words. There is no need for a few more decades. The same is with all recreations of originals. A work of art is deemed beautiful initially no matter the originality or not, but the beauty can fade away. However, the original will be beautiful for eternity. The original always outlasts the recreation. So for a person, they will always be loved for their original self and no recreation could capture every beloved detail.
In Black Mirror especially, the recreation is only created based on his public “performance” when in reality he was so much more. In order to see the original more accurately represented she had to upload personal material about Ash. Even with her uploads and voiced commands, he stills has many imperfections that show his lack of authenticity. Then she begins to realize how she cannot love someone as inauthentic as Ash #2.
I think this episode, or even show, as a whole represent how technology is advancing immensely. Each episode reflects how technology is taking over and how it is having both negative and positive effects on the world. The show focuses on the unanticipated consequences of the world. This is important as our class focuses on how the world has changed. As the world continues to be molded by these technological advances, so does each individual. It is unlikely that people disregard technology because they would rather succumb to it. We are greatly influenced by this technology as it gives us more possibilities, like bringing loved ones back to life. Though what we most often miss is that these advances are affecting how we see the world in all its originality. We look to the past for ideas of how to advance, yet we also look to the future on how to bring back the past. Black mirror shows how we engage in these advances and how originality is essential, bot physically and intellectually

  1. I found it very interesting that you mentioned how the past and future play off of each other in a manner that allows both of them to expand. This is somewhat funny in a way because it shows that humans are not the type of being to let the past be the past. I feel like it accurately portrays how difficult it is for people to let go of something.
